Control Your Emotions will combine both Procedural Narrative and Procedural Generation to change the game based on a player’s real time emotions.
- Procedural Narrative - An automatic process that creates a narrative over time, where that narrative is not determined before the process begins; the narrative will continuously be generated depending on the player’s real time emotion.
- Procedural Generation - Makes games infinitely repayable, so can we create a world that can infinitely be changed.
These pictures show how the player can manually enter their current emotions, allowing the system to procedurally generate an appropriate response.
First Iteration: Getting The Basics Down
In this video, I show off the basic functionality of my manual input emotional check system.
How It Works
This is the main process and flow of the system:
- The NPC says a line.
- The System checks for the player’s real-time emotion.
- The System procedurally generates a response related to the detected emotions.
- The NPC generates a response based on their customized personality.
- The system checks where in the conversation loop it is; if the conversation is still going, the system will loop through steps 1-4.
- If the conversation is in the end stage, the system takes the last felt emotion and procedurally generates an appropriate end conversation result.
- The end conversation result resolves and the emotional data from the conversation is saved, allowing it to be used as reference to further develop the main narrative of the game.

In order to graduate from UAT, students have to prove that they can innovate something completely original that can serve as a benefit to advance the tech world. UAT recognized the impact that my SIP, "Control Your Emotions" could potentially have on story building in the game industry, so they offered me to the opportunity to be included in an issue of their magazine, "Behind the Bits." Since there are many other students with great SIPs, it is honor to be recognized by UAT; this proved that I have the ability to stand out amongst the crowd.
